About
King of England known as one of the greatest rulers of the Middle Ages. He invaded England and conquered the country at the Battle of Hastings. He was crowned king on Christmas Day in 1066. He built the Tower of London in the 1070s. He was also known as William I, William the Bastard, and William of Normandy.
Before Fame
He was born as a member of the Norman aristocracy. At age 15, he was knighted. He served as Duke of Normandy.
Trivia
He spent most of his reign in Europe. In 1086, he ordered the compilation of the Domesday Book which listed England's land holdings. He died in September 1087 while leading a campaign in northern France.
Family Life
He married Matilda of Flanders. He and his wife had nine children, including four sons and five daughters. He was succeeded to the English throne by his third son, William II. His fourth son, Henry I also became King of England.
