Ruler of England from the time of his brother's assassination in 1100 until his own death in 1135. He was the last English king of the House of Normandy. He was largely a self-made man, having received no inheritance at the time of his father's death. He seized the throne at the time of his brother's death.

He was the first English-speaking king. He is known for attempting to make social reforms and drafted the Charter of Liberties, generally thought of to be the predecessor of the Magna Carta.
