American pharmacologist and neurobiologist known for his research of ion channels. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

He attended Brown University and then Johns Hopkins University for his PhD.

In 1972, he published his thesis on structural and catalytic properties of mitochondrial ATPase. Over the years, he has won a handful of awards for his contributions to science. From 1984 until 2016, he served as chair of the University of Washington's pharmacology department.
