The Ocean State
The state of Rhode Island is located in the New England region. Rhode Island is the smallest state by total land area. The state's largest metropolitan area is that of the Greater Boston area. The state's full title is State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. It was the 13th state to join the Union.
The state's motto is, "Hope." Newport has over 400 miles of coastline. Residents of the state are referred to as Rhode Islanders.
