Sitar player of Hindustani classical music and the daughter of the founder of Maihar gharana. In 1991, she was given the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the highest award given to artists by the Indian government.

Family Life
Her father is sitar guru Alauddin Khan and her brother was legendary Sarod maestro Ali Akbar Khan. She was married to world famous sitarist Ravi Shankar from 1941 until 1961. They had one child together.
