Federal holiday in the U.S. that was established by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919 as Armistice Day, a year after the Armistice with Germany was signed, putting an end to World War I combat between the Allies and Germany.
Many workers and students across the U.S. have Veterans Day off. Federal government offices, outside of the essential ones, are closed and no mail is delivered.
