Originally established in 1903 as the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, the school would be organized into six undergraduate residential colleges, five academic divisions and five graduate and professional schools after becoming UC San Diego in 1960.
In the 2000's, the university added new professional schools called the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Rady School of Management. It also added the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology to be run jointly with University of California, Irvine.
