Historically black university founded as the Houston Colored Junior College before being declared the first state university in Houston in 1947. It was renamed Texas State University for Negroes at that time before becoming Texas Southern University in 1951.
The school became a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and is home to the Thurgood Marshall School of Law, one of four public law schools in Texas.
