Historically black, public research institution and one of the oldest public universities in the United States which was founded by act of the North Carolina General Assembly as the Agricultural and Mechanical College for the Colored Race.
It was the second college established under the provisions of the Morrill Land-Grant Acts. It initially offered education in Agriculture, English, Horticulture, and Mathematics. It has a top ranked College of Engineering.
