The Thundering Herd
Named after the fourth Chief Justice of the United States, John Marshall Harlan II, the public coeducational research university would be made up of nine undergraduate colleges. The school was originally founded as a private subscription school.
In 1970, the school's football team as well as coaches and fans were involved in an airplane crash that killed everyone on board. The story has been told in the award-winning documentary Marshall University: Ashes to Glory and the feature film We Are Marshall.
