Planet that wasn't recognized as such until the late 1700s, despite being observed on a number of documented occasions. Sir William Herschel was the first astronomer to locate the planet through a telescope in 1781, but it took him multiple years to conclude it was a planet, and not a star or comet.
It is the only planet that takes its name from Greek mythology. Its name was inspired by the Greek god of the sky, Ouranos.
