Greek-born film director, film producer, screenwriter, photographer, and theatre director. Since 2015, he has made most of his films in English. He has been nominated for three Academy Awards since then: Best Original Screenplay for The Lobster (2015) and Best Director and Best Picture for The Favourite (2018).
Before Fame
He graduated from the Moraitis School, then studied business administration and played basketball for a period in Pagrati B.C. He dropped out to study directing for film and television at the Hellenic Cinema and Television School Stavrakos (HCTSS) in Athens. He directed TV commercials and videos for Greek dance-theater companies.
Trivia
He was a member of the creative team that designed the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
Family Life
He was born in Pangrati, Athens. He was raised by his mother. His father, Antonis Lanthimos, was a professional basketball player who played for Pagrati B.C. and the Greece national basketball team. Since 2013, he has been married to Greek-French actress Ariane Labed.
