Greek novelist, essayist, and lawyer who was a notable figure in the Generation of the '30s, a group of Greek writers and intellectuals who introduced modernism in Greek art and literature. He is best known for his 1936 novel Argo, a depiction of Athenian life in the 1920s, and his 190 novel Leonís, set in the Constantinople he knew as a child.

Before Fame

He studied law at the University of Athens, graduating in 1926. He went on to study in Paris and London.

Trivia

He shifted his attention to theatre after World War II. He focused more on playwriting and working as the director of the National Theatre. His play The Game of Madness and Prudence, set in Byzantine times, achieved critical success.

Family Life

His parents were Michael Theotokas and Androniki Nomikou. He was born in Constantinople (present-day Istanbul, Turkey) and relocated to Athens with his family after the Smyrna Massacre during the Greco-Turkish War. He died in Athens.
