French computer scientist known for his work in machine learning, robotics, and computational neuroscience. He is Vice-President and Chief AI Scientist at Meta and the Silver Professor of the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University. He received the Turing Award in 2018 for his work on deep learning with Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton.
Before Fame
He studied engineering at ESIEE Paris and went on to earn a PhD in computer science from the Sorbonne University.
Trivia
He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, as well as the French Académie des Sciences. He received the IEEE Neural Network Pioneer Award in 2014, and the PAMI Distinguished Researcher Award in 2015. He became the founding director of the NYU Center for Date Science in 2012. For his contributions to science, in 2018 he received the Harold Pender Award from the University of Pennsylvania.
