Austrian painter who is known for being one of Austria's most important abstract painters and for helping to foster the abstract movement among young artists for decades through his teaching.

Before Fame

He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from the years 1947 through 1954. He began developing his career upon graduation and quickly became popular.

Trivia

He had a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from the years 1972 through 1997. He was awarded the Guggenheim Prize in the year 1958 and the Carnegie Prize- Pittsburgh in the year 1961. From the year 1962 onwards, he lived and worked in Rechberg, Styria, where he built for himself a 14-meter-high studio tower.

He was born in Klagenfurt, Austria. His father died before he was born and his mother died when he was an infant. He was raised by his aunt in Frohnleiten, Styria, Austria.
