She also co-wrote the book for the stage musical Wicked. She has earned a scriptwriting Emmy Award nomination for My So-Called Life and a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical. 

Before Fame

She earned a degree in English with a concentration in Creative Writing from Princeton University before going on to earn her master's degree in musical Theatre Writing on full scholarship from New York University. There, she was taught by some of the biggest names in music and theatre production, including Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein.

She has acted in several cameo roles within her own TV shows as well as guest appearances on the show Curb Your Enthusiasm and a small role in the film Jerry Maguire.

She was born into a Jewish family. Her brother, Ernest Holzman, is a cinematographer. She married actor Paul Dooley in 1984. They have a daughter named Savannah.
