Politician and member of the Democratic Party. She served on the Alameda County Board of Supervisors and then in 2000, moved on to the California State Assembly, where she served the maximum number of terms allowable by law. During her time at the Assembly, she served as Majority Whip and then Majority Leader. She made a bid for the Senate in 2008, but lost. Her committee appointments focused on the elderly, economic development, the environment, and healthcare.

She was the first woman and the first Asian-American to hold the position of Assembly Majority Leader. She held the position from 2002 to 2004. She was known for her passion for fashion.
Family Life
She was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Both of her parents were Chinese immigrants. She married a public-school teacher and together they shared two children and two grandchildren. In November of 2021, she was struck by a vehicle and died.
