Before Fame
He first started playing the trombone at the age of fifteen. In 1982, he started performing as a background vocalist to other salsa singers. He gained further attention when he joined the musical group Conjunto Chaney. Then in 1988, he started his solo career as a singer.

He was born and raised in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. He has two children named Rafael Angel Gonzalez and Marco Antonio Gonzalez.
