Novelist, pianist, and composer. He worked as an accompanist for the Royal Ballet School and spent a decade with the Boston Ballet before becoming a writer. He eventually became the author of over 30 young-adult books, including Interstellar Pig, The Green Futures of Tycho, House of Stairs, Strange Attractors, and The Spirit House.

He was born in Havre de Grace, Maryland to William Warner, Jr. and Esther Kaplan. His father was a physiologist and a professor, while his mother was a doctor. His brother, Daniel, is a computer scientist who has taught at Carnegie Mellon University. His second brother, Tycho, is a physicist who holds a teaching position at New York University. He had one sister, Lucy, who died in 2003.
