William Peyton Hubbard

About

Canadian politician known for being one of the first politicians of African descent elected to office in Canada. He first entered office in 1854, and throughout his career would be elected 15 times and pass almost 100 civic initiatives for the Toronto city council.

Before Fame

Before entering the political field, he was a baker. He invented and patented the Hubbard Portable oven.

Trivia

His nickname was Cicero or Old Cicerco, due to his talent as a thoughtful public speaker. His portrait is still hanging in the office of the Mayor of Toronto. There is also a commemorative plaque of him is still outside of his former home, which is named the Hubbard House. 

Family Life

He was the son of slaves who escaped from the United States using the Underground Railroad. He married Julia Luckett, and the couple had four children: Mary, William, Frederick, and Lillian.
