American army surgeon and lexicographical researcher. He served as a doctor for the Union Army during the Civil War, and after the war was over, he sought treatment at a psychiatric hospital for PTSD. During his stay there, he contributed greatly to the development of the Oxford English Dictionary and would read through antiquated books to determine how words were used in the past.

He attended Yale University where he studied medicine.
