Before Fame
He served his apprenticeship as a draper in Perth. He moved from Perthshire to Birmingham and then set up a business as a draper. He sold football kits at his shop, and his business became a popular place for football fans to meet.
Trivia
From 1888 to 1892, he served as chairman of the League's Management Committee and was the League's President from 1892 until 1894. In parallel, he served as chairman of the Football Association between 1888 and 1894.
Family Life
In 1870, he followed his brother to Birmingham where he established a business in the Aston area of the city. He was married to Jessie. They had a son and a daughter.
