American politician who served as the first governor of Michigan from 1805 to 1813. As a soldier, he fought in the American Revolution and was a general in the War of 1812.

Before Fame

He attended Yale University and graduated in 1772. He went on to pass the bar in 1775 and joined a militia as soon as the American Revolution broke out.

Trivia

He was a personal friend of Nathan Hale and was largely responsible for publicizing his famous quote, "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country."

He was married to Sarah Fuller with whom he had four children.
