American Navy admiral known for his service in the First and Second World Wars. He commanded the USS Shaw during World War I. He went on to lead the Guadalcanal and Solomon Islands campaigns during World War II.

He attended the United States Naval Academy and graduated in 1904.

Trivia

A number of buildings and streets have been named after him, such as Halsey Hall at the University of Virginia, and William F. Halsey Avenue in Bakersfield, California. James Cagney portrayed him in the 1959 biopic The Gallant Hours. Following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, Halsey's task force was essentially the last battle group left in operation in the Pacific.

He and Frances Cooke Grandy married in 1909. They had two children.
