About

English archaeologist and priest in the Church of England known for his excavations in Northeastern England. He compiled an enormous private collection of antiquities throughout his life, many of which date from the Bronze Age in Britain. The collection is on display in the British Museum.

Before Fame

He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from University College, Durham in June 1839. He later returned to study theology.

Trivia

He was the president of the Architectural and Archaeological Society of Durham from 1865 until his death. He was awarded the Medal of the Royal Numismatic Society in 1898. He gained an interest in archaeology at an early age, while playing in the dirt with his brother at their family's estate.

Family Life

He was the eldest son of William Thomas Greenwell and Dorothy Smales. He had three brothers, Francis, Alan, and Henry, and a sister Dorothy.
