American actor best known for portraying detectives and policemen in film, television, and radio. He portrayed detective Martin Kane in the radio-television series Martin Kane, Private Eye. He had an acclaimed starring role in the 1940 romantic drama They Knew What They Wanted.

He sold bootleg whiskey to New York speakeasies before launching his acting career. 

Trivia

He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in They Knew What They Wanted. He received the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 1967. He developed throat cancer in the late 1950s, which ultimately led to the end of his acting career.
