About

American botanist who has played a key role in investigations in plant pathology. His course in plant pathology was the first of its kind taught in the United States. He became known as the "father" of cryptogrammic botany (the study of seedless and flowerless plants) because of his extensive studies in the field.

Before Fame

He studied medicine at Harvard University, and went on to continue his studies in Europe.

He received honorary degrees from Harvard University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of Glasgow. He was president of the American Society of Naturalists, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Botanical Society of America. He was also gifted with musical talents. While in Europe, he studied with other esteemed botanists.
