English civil engineer and millwright who is known for inventing a type of windmill sail and the prison treadwheel.
Before Fame
In 1800, he was an apprentice to James Lyon, a cabinet-maker. In 1804, he worked with his father at the Bacton Wood Mills and constructed a machine for splitting hides.
Trivia
He worked on canals, docks, and railways, including the South Eastern Railway and the Great Northern Railway. He was president of the Institution of Civil Engineers between 1850 and 1851. He served as the chief engineer of The Crystal Palace, the grandeur exhibition space that was erected in Hyde Park in London, in the mid 1800s.
Family Life
He is the son of Joseph Cubitt and Hannah Lubbock. He had two brothers, Benjamin and Joseph. He married Abigail Sparkhall in 1809 and had one son, Joseph and two daughters. He married Elizabeth Jane Tiley in 1821 and they had a son, William.
