American conceptual artist known for his work across multiple media including painting, sculpture, and photography. He was heavily influenced by the French Dada artist Marcel Duchamp. His works have been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, and the Museum of Modern Art.
Before Fame
Early in his career, he met the Canadian American artist Philip Guston. He held his first solo exhibition in the year 1964. Following this, he had a number of exhibitions at the Dwan Gallery between the years 1965 and 1970.
Trivia
He claimed that Marcel Duchamp attended one of his exhibitions. Arts journalist Grace Glueck praised his work in the pages of the New York Times.
Family Life
His mother was a Sicilian of Algerian descent.
Associated With
He was a friend of the avant-garde composer John Cage. The two played chess together regularly.
