His real name is Willem Ian Ungermann. He grew up surfing in Burleigh, Australia. When he was 33, his mother bought him a fishing rod. He developed a positive obsession, leaving behind the struggles he'd been having with mental health and addiction. He previously worked as a professional water photographer.

In his series, 'Powerfish Gift', he carries out acts of kindness such as paying for a pensioner's groceries or helping a family in need. He also promotes awareness and attention around mental health. His willempowerfishh Facebook page has a following of 650,000. In 2020, he was faced with the possibility of jail or a hefty fine for accidentally sinking a car and boat trailer. He is known to also post fishing content on his willem_powerfish Instagram page, which boasts a following of more than 700,000 fans.
