Before Fame
He attended the Käthe-Kollwitz-Gymnasium and later received a degree in food technology from the Humboldt University of Berlin. He worked as a research assistant at Humboldt. He was an activist for peace ecology and human rights in several oppositional groups from the 1970s.
Trivia
In 1989, during the Peaceful Revolution that led to the opening of borders between East Germany and the West, he was a founding member of the New Forum, representing the group at the Round Table. At one point, he was the speaker of the Green Party.
Family Life
He was born in Zwickau, Saxony, Germany. His father was an independent haulage contractor and former professional officer from a social-democratic dominated family. He was married and had two children.

In 2022, he was awarded the German National Prize, an honor also given to Vaclav Havel (in 2003).
