Director and producer whose 2018 film, Rafiki, became the first Kenyan film to be selected for the Cannes Film Festival. She is also known for movies including 2009's Pumzi and 2008's From a Whisper. In 2023, she was honored with the Spirit of Cinema Award at the 28th International Film Festival of Kerala.
Before Fame
In 2001, she graduated from the University of Warwick with a BSc degree in Management Science.

In 2019, it was announced that she would direct Millie Bobby Brown in an adaptation of the YA novel The Thing About Jellyfish. She co-founded the African art media collective Afrobubblegum.
