Former wrestler who represented his home country of Russia in the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics and earned a bronze medal. Throughout the entirety of his career, he competed as a Greco-Roman light-heavyweight. In addition to his Olympic title, he was also named the European and World Champion in 1987.

His involvement in wrestling first took off in 1973, although it wasn't until 1986 that he was called upon to join the Soviet national team.
Trivia
Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, he decided to formally retire from participation in the sport, however, he took up coaching in Australia and Sweden.

He is the father of Ivan Popov, who is a competitive wrestler for the country of Australia.
