Australian poet and writer who is best known for his work inspired by the Tasmanian landscape and Australian colonial life. He was regarded as an advocate for Australian literature and Australian writers. Smith won the Kenneth Slessor Prize for Poetry in 1983 and the Patrick White Award in 1997.

Trivia
He taught at schools such as the University of Sydney and the University of Tasmania. Smith's first book of poetry, The Other Meaning, was published in 1956 and he has since published eight further collections, among which Tide Country won the New South Wales Premier's Prize for Poetry and the Grace Leven Prize.

He and his wife Sybille had two daughters and a son.
