American organized crime figure who became a Chicago outfit courier during the mid-1930s. She was also famous for being the girlfriend of mobster Bugsy Siegel.
Before Fame
In 1933 she left Georgia for Chicago with her teenage husband George Randell, hoping to enter the pornography business. Once in Chicago, she divorced Randell. She found a job as a waitress at the mob-run San Carlo Italian Village exhibit during the 1933 Century of Progress Chicago's World Fair, and supplemented her income as a prostitute.
Trivia
In 1991, she was played by Annette Bening in the movie Bugsy, with Warren Beatty starring as Bugsy Siegel. She also inspired the Joan Crawford character in the 1950 film noir The Damned Don't Cry.
Family Life
She was born Onie Virginia Hill in 1916 in Lipscomb, Alabama. By the time she was eight, she had moved to Marietta, Georgia with her mother and siblings after her parents separated. She dropped out of school after finishing eighth grade. In 1951, Time magazine referred to her as the "queen of the gangsters' molls."
