About

American film, stage, and television actress best known for her role in Fritz Lang's Western Union and Jean Renoir's Swamp Water, both in 1941. She was married to actor Yul Brynner from 1944 to 1960. She also acted on Broadway, playing the title role in Dear Ruth, directed by Moss Hart. She went on to teach drama at Yale University from 1966-1968. 

Before Fame

She began her stage career at the age of 15 in San Francisco, but later moved to Los Angeles to pursue work in films. 

Trivia

In the 1940s, her movie role options started dwindling as she was relegated to supporting parts in less successful films. She retired from films in 1952. Her acting credits over the course of her career include over fifteen different film titles. 

Family Life

She was born and raised in El Monte, California. Her father was a retired British Army officer. She and Brynner had a son, Yul "Rock" Brynner.
