Brazilian poet, diplomat, lyricist, singer, artist, writer, author, musician, vocalist, entertainer, performer, and playwright who was also known by his nickname O Poetinha. He is also best recognized for his song "A Garota de Ipanema", which he co-wrote with composer Antônio Carlos Jobim.

Before Fame

He attended Afrânio Peixoto Primary School. In the year 1929, he graduated from St. Ignatius, a Jesuit high school. That same year, he was admitted to the Faculty of Law at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.  

Trivia

His play Orfeu da conceição was adapted into the film Black Orpheus, which won an Academy Award in 1959 for Best Foreign Language Film.

His birth name is Marcus Vinícius da Cruz e Mello Moraes. He was married four times. He was first married to author Tati de Moraes. He was also married to Maria Lucia Proença, Cristina Gurjao, and Gilda de Queirós Mattoso. He has five children, Suzana, Pedro, Maria, Georgiana, and Luciana de Moraes.
