American mobster who at one time was a captain in the Bonanno crime family. In January of 2014, he was arrested by the FBI on charges related to the 1978 Lufthansa heist. He was later found not guilty. In June of 2017, he pleaded guilty to ordering a car arson. As a result, in late December 2017, he was sentenced to eight years in prison.
Before Fame
He got involved in the world of organized crime at a young age. He rose through the ranks and eventually became a capo in the Bonanno family in the 1970s.
Trivia
In November of 2015, after he was acquitted of all charges related to the Lufthansa heist, he famously said to his lawyer, "Don't let them see the body in the trunk." He had also been a suspect in the 1969 murder of Paul Katz, but was again acquitted of all charges in November of 2015.
Family Life
He had a son named Jerome Asaro who also became a member of the infamous Bonanno crime family.
Associated With
The 1978 Lufthansa heist, to which he was linked, was depicted in the Martin Scorsese-directed film Goodfellas, which starred Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, and Joe Pesci.
