As a teenager, he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Just a few years later, he was taken by the Stampeders during the 1994 Canadian College Draft.

He was named "Most Valuable Canadian" during the 1998 Grey Cup. He later won his second and final grey Cup in the year 2001, retiring shortly after the season. He has focused on childhood cancer as a charitable cause in Calgary, both by fundraising and in hospital support.
