Hungarian actor known for his roles in Chicago, The Divine Lady and The King of Kings. He initially found success in his native country, as well as in Germany and Austria, in silent films, before relocating to the United States, where he continued to appear in films throughout the sound era.
Before Fame
He was educated at a commercial school in Hungary. After he became interested in acting, he attended the Actor Art High School in Budapest, from which he progressed to acting with the National Theatre in Budapest.
Trivia
He published his memoirs, "It's Not Enough to Be Hungarian," shortly before suffering a fatal heart attack at age 85.
Family Life
His birth name is Mihály Várkonyi. He was married to Lilliane Varconi until his death. From 1919 to 1949, he was married to Anna Aranyosy.
Associated With
Cecil B. DeMille gave him his American film debut in the film Triumph.
