About

Convicted murderer known as the last federal inmate executed in the United States before the moratorium on the death penalty. In 1960, he kidnapped and killed Dr. Edward Bartels. He was tried and convicted in federal court for these crimes and was executed in 1963. He blamed the crime on an "Alex Dupree", who is believed to be a totally fictional person.

Before Fame

By age 12, he lived in a boys' home and had a history of petty thefts. As a teenager, he was arrested for burglary and sentenced to 15 years. He was released only a couple of months before he killed Bartels.

Trivia

He appealed his death sentence, which was denied. Only John F. Kennedy could have commuted the death sentence. For his last meal, he requested a single olive with the pit still in it.

Family Life

In 1941, his mother died. As a child, his father became an alcoholic and he lived with various relatives.

Associated With

The federal death penalty was reinstated on June 11, 2001, for Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh.
