Remembered best for his role as King Tut in the 1960s live action television version of Batman, this American screen actor also appeared in the 1962 film What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, earning an Academy Award nomination for his role as Edwin Flagg.

Before Fame

He began his entertainment career in his late teens, performing with San Diego's Globe Theater Players troupe. He made his television debut in an episode of the late 1950s and early 1960s series 77 Sunset Strip.

Though he died in his early forties, he built his career upon playing much older characters, a circumstance that was made possible by his booming voice and heavyset build.

Family Life

He grew up in San Diego, California, as the child of Victor Francis Buono and Myrtle Belle Keller. His grandmother, Myrtle Glied, performed on the Vaudeville circuit and encouraged his early interest in acting.

He played the father of Bette Davis' character in the 1964 film Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte.
