Pharmacist, politician, and Republican party representative who was elected to the role of Kansas Insurance Commissioner in 2018, and again in 2022. In her former role as a Kansas State Senator, she focused on topics including the effort to protect Medicare for seniors and guarantee insurance coverage for the families of children diagnosed with autism. She also served as assistant majority leader from 2009 to 2012.
Before Fame
After completing her education at Wichita South High School, she went on to graduate from the School of Pharmacy at the University of Kansas. The school would later award her its highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, in 2019. Before running for political office, she worked as a local pharmacist for over 40 years and became the only pharmacist to hold a statewide elected office in the United States during her time as insurance commissioner.
Trivia
Her extensive experience in the pharmaceutical field led her to take notice of errors within the Kansas Medical Assistance Program that were costing the state millions of dollars. This inspired her to run for legislature. While in office, she implemented a new plan that recovered nearly $400 million for the state.
Family Life
She married her high school sweetheart Mike Schwartz in the year 1974. They raised two sons together. Their children are named Jonathan and Tyler. She also has four grandchildren.
