Before Fame

She graduated with a BA in journalism from the University of Southern California, where she was a film instructor in the late 1960s. She then held several positions at 20th Century Fox. For example, she was the assistant sound editor on Fritz Lang's film The Woman in the Window.

Trivia

She received an Academy Award and an American Cinema Editors Award for best editing for the film Jaws. Within a year of the film's release, she was appointed to the role of vice president for feature production at Universal Pictures. 

Family Life

She is the daughter of Sam Hellman and Selma Hellman. Her sister is Emmy Lou Hellman. She was married to Sam Fields between 1946 and 1954. They had two sons together.
