Photographer, photojournalist, educator, and teacher known for her work in documentary photography focusing on the lives of African Americans during the mid 20th century and for her work for the African American newspaper the California Eagle.
Before Fame
She enrolled in a photography program and took photography classes in high school. She worked as an assistant to the photographer Maceo Sheffield after graduating high school. She began her career as a photojournalist for the California Eagle.
Trivia
She earned a BA and a Master's degree in Education after her time as a photojournalist with the California Eagle. Her work has been featured in several exhibitions, including an Akron Art Museum exhibit A History of Women Photographers. Her work is partially on display at the University of Southern California as part of the Charlotta Bass & California Eagle Photograph Collection, 1870-1960.
Family Life
She was born and raised in Wichita, Kansas. She was inspired by her father to pursue photography because he was a photographer. She married Vernon D. Jackson in 1931. She had two sons named Ken and Kelly. She died on January 26, 1999 in Corona, California, U.S.
