Before Fame
She spent her early years in Barbados until her family moved to New York City when she was 15 years old. She knew she wanted to be a doctor since she was 8 years old. She studied biology at Long Island University Brooklyn. She graduated with a BS in biology in 1977.
Trivia
She earned a medical degree at Columbia University. She eventually performed more than 2,000 transplants as a transplant surgeon. She received the Order of Barbados Gold Crown of Merit. She appeared on multiple "Top Doctors" lists throughout her career.

She was born in Goodland, St. Michael Parish, Barbados. She was born to American parents. She had an older sister who died, which inspired her to become a doctor.
