Before Fame
He started climbing when he was 16 years old and began reading climbing books by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.
Trivia
In 1993, he became the first Finnish person to have reached the top of Mount Everest. In 1997, he also became the first Finn to have climbed to the summit without the use of bottled oxygen.

His parents are Kaj Gustafsson and Marja Gustafsson. In 2010, he married Henna Meriläinen.
