About

Former astronaut and doctor that once served as the Russian Medical Deputy of the Flight Director. During his career, he also served as Russia's Deputy Director of the Ministry of Public Health. He was a member of the International Space Researchers' Association and the International Academy of Astronauts. 

Before Fame

Prior to becoming an atronaut, he graduated from I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University where he earned his doctorate. In 1971, he began studying biomedicine astronautics at the Institute of Medical and Biological Problems, in Moscow, Russia. 

Trivia

He currently holds the world record for longest time in space, in which he stayed for exactly 437 days and 18 hours. In total, he spent 22 months in space during his career as an astronaut.

Growing up, he lived with his family in Tula, Russia. He lived in Russia until his death in 2022.
