Finnish geologist and geographer who studied tephrochronology and desertification, among other subjects. He is known for his explorations of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. He was a professor of geology at the University of Helsinki.

He was involved in the construction of a German submarine base at Tierra del Fuego. A documentary film about him was released in 2007. He is known for his book Finnlands Lebensraum, which he wrote with historian Eino Jutikkala and ethnographer Kustaa Vilkuna.

He was the son of Finnish politician Kyösti Auer.
