Highly decorated and experienced actor of the stage and screen whose career has spanned over several decades. His roles include starring turns in films such as Comedian Harmonists. He has portrayed the infamous war criminal Heinrich Himmler in both the 2004 historical drama Der Untergang, as well as the 2007 Dani Levy-directed comedy-drama Mein Führer. He also starred as Herr Taschenbier in the multi award-winning 2001 family comedy film Das Sams.
Before Fame
He initially attended school to study law. However, he later shifted his course to pursue acting at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart. He launched his performing career in theater first as a member of the Theater Freiburg, and later with the Staatliche Schauspielbühnen Berlin, where he gained recognition for his performances in stage productions such as Faust and A Midsummer Night's Dream. He made his on-screen debut in a 1991 episode of the television series Eurocops.

Family Life
He is the youngest of five children that were born to clergyman and dean of the Evangelical Lutheran Church Klaus-Peter Schmid. He married actress Friederike Wagner in the year 1992, and the pair became parents to a daughter named Camilla before their 2009 divorce. He later married writer Alina Bronsky, with whom he also has a daughter.
